s24 chair


Fun, bold versatile seating.


Inspired by Karim Rashid, contemporary third places, pop art, and Pantone, the S24 Chair is a multi-purpose seating solution suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Designed and fabricated over the course of 2 months with 1045 mild steel, 3d-printing PLA filament, and polycarbonate plastic.


Design Specifications


  1. Design and build an ergonomic chair that comfortably fits a range of body types.  
  2. The working prototype should be structurally sound using wood and/or metal. 
  3. Additional materials for surfaces and accents are permitted, however upholstery is not allowed. 
  4. Chairs must have a seat & back. Armrests are required based on research. No stools. 
  5. The minimum height for the seat is 8” and the maximum is no more than 18”. 
  6. Feet must be on the ground.
  7. Less than 20lbs. 



Concept Ideation & Form Development

Initial concept ideation done through thumbnail sketching and varying proportions.


Material & Fabrication Research

Cold vs hot rolled steel, metal tubings vs rods,  and thermoplastics vs thermoset plastics.



Prototyping

Scaled-down models, full size sketch and CAD models, user testing, and fabrication process.
